Definition

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is a concept and practice in software development and IT operations that involves managing and provisioning computing infrastructure through machine-readable script files rather than through physical hardware configuration or interactive configuration tools. The goal is to automate the process of infrastructure deployment and management, treating infrastructure elements as code.

Code

The term "code" here refers to scripts or configuration files written in a programming or scripting language. These files are used to define and describe the desired state of the infrastructure.

  • Automation: IaC automates the provisioning, configuration, and management of infrastructure. Automation reduces manual errors, speeds up deployment, and ensures consistency across environments.
  • Version Control: IaC scripts are often stored in version control systems (e.g., Git), allowing teams to track changes, collaborate, and roll back to previous states if needed.
  • Reproducibility: By using IaC, you can recreate an entire infrastructure environment reliably and consistently, whether it's for development, testing, or production.
  • Scalability: IaC makes it easier to scale infrastructure up or down based on demand. Dynamic scaling can be achieved by adjusting parameters in the code.
  • Documentation: IaC scripts serve as documentation for the infrastructure. Anyone with access to the code can understand and replicate the infrastructure setup.

  5. Chef and Puppet: Configuration management tools that support IaC by defining the desired state of the infrastructure.
